ive never kept one of these before and i wanna know how i should care for it.
im not new to keeping fish, but ive read some things about piranhas i dont quite get.

ive just got him 2 days ago and he doesn't swim much, and only eats while im not around. tank is fine and cycled, oscar and dempsey juvs lived in there for a while before the piranha.

ive read about digestion time.. any info on that?

and what species is this? sorry about picture quality. the fin under the tail is red and he has black spots as you can see.

btw he's 1"

1st thing you should do is consider getting a couple more rbps
2nd put some hiding places in the tank so he feels secure
good luck with your first P

well i dont think i have enough room for multiples.. and the only other piranha they had was getting beat to hell by the one i have... it was missing an eye and the tail was bitten off haha.

but i read they can get up to 12" so i'll probably end up moving all the fish in the 20g to the 10g and put the piranha in the 20. i also added a couple things in the 10 like suggested but he wont get moved to the 10 until tomorrow.

and finally, what should i feed this beast? the guy at the store said flakes, but that's like eating communion...
i fed him beafheart and he seemed to eat that up just fine.
of course i want to feed him feeders.. but should i wait until he gets bigger?

dont feed him feeders as a staple.. they are not a good source of food for piranhas.. try to get him on pellets early on its better for them

alright. i tried to feed him pellets but he just hit them and then let them fall. i guess i'll just feed him beefheart since he likes to like that.

but any info on digestion time?

Don't feed it beefhearts all the time. Once in a while is ok.

It will eat the pellets, but you need to work on that. Put a few in the tank. If it doesn't eat them in a few minutes, up to 5 minutes, then remove the pellets and try again the next day. If at that time it doesn't eat, then try bloodworms or a small peice of fish.

There are a few threads about prepping fish fillets and shrimp around.

good luck with the little guy.
