New to Piranhas

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Okay, I'm about to change the water in my tank for the first time. I'm going to take out about 30% of that so about 9 gallons? Do I have to put more of the cycle in or just this Genesis chlorine removal stuff?

Once the tank is cycled you don't need to refill it with cycled water after waterchange, unless you will be replace 1005 of the water. Just add the proper amount of dechlorinator in the water you'll be adding to the tank. I usually do that before I add the water and let the water warm up to at least room temperature so it won't change the temperature of the tank too much. You should also check your tap water to see if you need to add anything else other than just dechlorinator, normally you don't have to and piranhas are tough fish.

post some pics of your tank and piranha if you can.

If you get lucky, your water will have no chlorine.. Well lucky for fish keeping anyways.. haha

I'ma post some tank pictures hopefully tomorrow. My digi-cam is busted so my cousin is bringing hers over before we leave for a family vacation Friday.

Awesome, another new piranha that wants to do things right. So far great advice has been given & I agree with the other posters regarding tank size, 100 gallon is what they will need, or else you will end up with 1 or 2 fish left very soon due to cannibalism. Look on craigslist for a good used tank. When you find one for a good price try to go check it out asap & if it's in good shape & holds water get it because they go fast & if you don't someone else will. Expect to spend anywhere from $75 to 200 for a 100-150 gallon tank, depending on what it comes with (stand, lights, etc.)
Then go here & get 2 AC110 hang on back filters. For substrate nothing is cheaper than sand & fish love it. Go with 1 pound of sand per gallon. It will run you like $10-15 for the sand. You'll need all the other normal accessories like heaters & stuff. I just set up a 135 gallon. I paid $180 for the tank, stand, lids, lights, heater, driftwood, & other miscellaneous accesories. $90 on 2 AC110's, $10 on sand, so total for that setup was approximately $280.
Welcome to the forum & piranha keeping.

Thanks for all the help. I figure I have about two months before these guys start to eat each other, and that's if I'm lucky. They've been doing fine so far - just eating at the guppies in there and what not. I hope to have a 100 - 120 gal just before Christmas which gives me plenty of time to get the supplies.

Another quick question: right now the piranha are about an inch long at the most, is it okay to feed them the shrimp this early?

I'm guessing you got 5 red belly piranhas? the tank is too small and won't last until May/June, probably few weeks the most since they grow very quick and you have 5 of them.
If you can get them on pellets/flakes then go for it, other wise try market shrimps and fish fillets. guppies would be fine every now and then, but make sure you quarantine them first.

i grew 5 reds in a 29 gallon in my my house last year, although i ended up with 4 i think you could keep them till the summer. keep them well fed, i like blood worms for the little guys. (when u say dime size u mean 1" and under, i hope.) and most of all use common sense, change water, keep it clean, keep em' feed past that their easy. oh by the way, they are the **** at keggers, sometimes i go small mouth fishing right before a big party get something to feed my fish and entertain my guests. but thats me, a lot of ppl on this site will dissagree with that.

looking good. thought it was a 30" tall tank, if it's 30" long then it can last longer.
