New to Planted Tank and need help~!!!

yes, I have two sumps running right now. On the 90 and 178 gallon....how often do I have to pat the dirt? With piranhas in the tank, I wouldn't want to constantly be patting the dirt. The grow to be 15" large and I have seven of them at 6-7" right now.

Will the black diamond sand / flurorite sand method be my best bet then?
 
The patting will be needing to be done for the first month for sure (daily), then maybe once a week for a month. Then after that you really will only have tiny bubbles. I still have tiny bubbles DAILY and mine has been setup for 6 months.
