New to plants: Goldfish friendly plants?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
He is wrong, that is not enough light for most plants. They will only suffice for the lowest light necessity. THe bulbs they had were 8,000K bulbs right. Do you know what type of bulb exactly you have, is it a 10,000K bulb?

i was just thinking about it this afternoon that i should hold up on buying the right bulb b/c i've been shopping around for a bigger tank and stand. I already have a used rena xp3 for $25 with a couple of beer this afternoon. a buddy of mine hooked me up with his old canister cuz he got this eheim canister. (that thing is expensive. holy cow!) now, i'm gonna try to see if i can get a good deal on 40 and up gallon tanks with the stand. been shopping around and i don't like what i see. maybe by then, i gonna really start on my planted aquarium.
but, to answer your question, no. i only have a 800k. its not good enough but i'll keep it in there for now until i get a new tank. i think the store had that 1000k for $10 or something i forgot. thanks for the info i'll use it when i get a new tank.

1000K and down isn't used in aquariums for florescent tubes. The types commonly seen in the aquarium hobby are 6500K, 6700K, 7200K, 8000K, 10,000K, for freshwater.

Wyldfya,
do you happen to know what snail eggs looks like? cuz i bought thess new plants for my tank last week and i didn't know anything about bleaching them before placing them in my tank. (i know now). i did see 3 small snails that night after i got them in. they are around the size of the tip of a pencil. sorry to say it but i took all three and killed them. i know its bad for me to kill them but i was scared and didn't know what to do with them. i can't let them go out in the public pond that would be not good. i haven't seen any snails since then.
anyways, back to my question... i see these green little circular eggs all over my substrate. they stick to the pebbles and some on the driftwood and on the leaves. i've been looking at what snail eggs look like in google but they are grouped together. the ones that i have are green and very small and they are all placed all over the bottom of the tank but in singles. i hope they are some sort of a plant seed and not snail eggs. i would greatly appreciate what you think about them cuz i've been looking and reasearching what these little boogers are. i will try to get a pic of them when i get my camera back cuz pictures would greatly help. thanks.

My guess would be cyanobacteria covering the bottom with bubble pearling from photsynthesis. Poke them with a net or something, the bubble will release. Eggs from snails are in bunches, depending on what type they are they may or may not be visable. My ramshorns have large eggs that are quite obvious, but I recently got rid of a small black footed snail that laid eggs that were nearly impossible to see. Then their are apple snail eggs that are out of the water. What type of snail did you have, or what did they look like? In order for your plants to drop seeds there would have to be some kind of flower, or seed pod growing prior to them dropping.

2 goldfish will foul the water quality of a 10g in no time....As for plants....Tie moss to sewing thread frames and place it at the back and sides of the tanks....The moss will grow all over the back and sides....I do not know if this is your first planted tank, but always wise to start off with small sized tanks to experiment....

Wise to start "easy" and build from there. Easy plants are a good start, especially those that don't grow to big. However, small is bad if you are just starting saltwater.

I think your right about the cynobacter. i just need to do my water changes and suck up all those bacteria out of the bottom of the tank. i was scared that it might be snail eggs but it wasn't on bundles so my fear was temporary.
well, about the plants, i think that would be a good idea to start with just beginner plants and then work myself to harder plants. the moss idea at the back of the tank seems pretty cool but i don't have time to set it all up. work and school and relationshipsss. hehe. i'd stay with the moss on the wood for now and stuff. the easy stuff that way i'm not gonna pull out all my hairs out if the goldies pull out the plants like what they are doing almost every day. i'm tempted to borrow my friend's little dwarf puffer just to mess with the goldies if they pull the plants out. that little puffer is one mean little fellow! holy cow that girl will nip at fish 1000000x bigger than she is. fiesty lil fellow but its cute to look at.
oh btw, if your wondering my water chem is 0-0-20 to 40. i think that is not bad for 2 goldies in a little tank. i need to tone down the nrates thouch that's prob why i have that cynobacter infestation. jsut feeding the fish every other day is good enough.

Leave the cyano in there, and let the goldfish eat it. Free food. You should check your nitrates as federal regulation says that 10ppm of nitrate is the limit. I know I have more than that too though, but I'm on an aquifer that is pumped up, and only run through a sand filter.

AHHHH!!!!!! i did a water 25% change and found a little fry when i filled up the water back up!!!!!!! i was sooo shocked!!!!! i couldn't believe my eyes what i saw so i stopped everything even the pumps, the filling up of water and the filter!!! and tried to brush my eyes to make sure what i saw was actually a little baby fish. it took me about 5 mins to see him again cuz it went swimming across the tank and back behind the filter. i can barely see it cuz it was so tiny and it was clear in color. i quickly scooped it up with my empty betta bowl before the other goldies eats it. it is now in a .5gallon betta bowl and i have no clue watsoever to take care of it. i can barely take care of a goldfish and now i have a tiny little fry!!!! i think its not going to last long under my care cuz of my novice knowledge of fish.
i have no clue watsoever how my two goldfish mated. i thought goldfish mating season is during spring and summer. do you think those cyanobacters were actually fish eggs? i hope not. if that fry had brothers and sisters, it must be dead by now cuz probably of my cleaning and my filters. i need to stop feeding my goldfishes protien rich food and go back to carbs. i thought protein rich foods are good for the fish cuz it helps them grow bigger but i just read that its a good food to feed the fish before mating. argh!
if that was not the case, do you think i got that little fry when i got new plants from the lfs? i doubt it cuz i bleach dip my plants before i placed them in my tank. i'm so confused.
