Hi everyone, just wanted to ay hello to all you good people.. .Been reading the varius threads for the oast couple days and learning quite a lot... Ive had fish for years, but never seen any bichir for sale in all that time. that is till a few months ago when i saw little 2-3 inch senegals at pets at home (kinda like petco i guess) needless to say i had to have 1. Only had a 32 gallon planted community so had to get a new tank (good excuse, no?) So got a 65 gallon which is set up as a bigger fish community- all over 6 inch when grown... filament barbs hoplo cats firemouths leopard bushfish... that kind of thing. Anyway, senegal looking good and growing well (about 6 inch now) So, one day im down lfs and what do i see? 4 inch ornate, got to have it lol, so now i have 2! didnt realise id so rarely see the ornate, but i guess it makes it all the better when he does show his face? So now im thinking about a bigger tank, next year, most likely a 135 0r 180 and i figure that will make a good final size tank? pleae correct me if im wrong, obviously i want to do the best thing here... so now im looking at a mail order site and somehow i order a delhezi approx 5 inch!!! From what ive read on here and elsewhere the 3 of them should get on ok? and as long as they arent going hungry should do ok with other fish? again, if im wrong, please jump in. I d have a question, if anyone can help.. regarding feeding... the 2 i have both are eating, currently being fed krill, small frozen fish the name of which escapes me right now, mealworms and bloodworm that are put in fro other fish... I just got some earthworms which i will be trying too. Once a week i get live river shrimp, have seen the ornate eating one, but the senegal doesnt seem intersted, im not too worried about that though. senegal will half heartedly eat te odd catfish pellet, but doesnt seem to enamoured by them,,, not sure about the ornate, cus im sure he does most of his foraging at night. ive also just ordered some hikari sinking carnivore pellets to see how they go down. anyway back to the point. i saw a video today of a really cool tank with several polypterus and they were feeding from the surface, floating pellets i guess. I recently bought some hikari floating carnivore sticks thinking they would be a good thing, but when i put them in they just float around for a while until they eventually get picked off by the barbs.. i guess what i am asking is, is there a knack to get the polys surface feeding? it would be nice to know that i could fall back on pellet food if for some reason i couldnt get frozen. I tried 'wafting' a stick around in the water to spread the scent, but the senegal, who was right under my hand, just looked at me like i was a fool lol.... Anyway,. thanks for listening and sorry if ive rambled on :)

Yeah... Just wish I saw the ornate more.. saying that, he did just swim up for air and have a little cruise amongst the plants, never in the open like the senegal though! Is it true they get 'braver' as they get bigger?

Some bichirs take along time to pellet train them. i have been training them to take pellets since 1 month ago when i first bought them, till now they still refuse to eat pellets. try starving them for a week, and feed them pellets

Ornates are often the shyest and less active in a tank, so good chance of it never being active, especially compared with a Senegal, often the most active. A 180g would be awesome filled with some of the Polys that get hugeeee. As for surface pellet training, I've never tried but there isn't really a need for it. My Polys swarm the Nls Thera a pellets I put in. Nls is a great staple food for Polys, with treats of tilapia, shrimp, earthworms, bloodworms, etc.

Thanks for the reply guys... I dont think i can get those nls thera pellets here in uk, looked on ebay and saw some in israel for £19, (thats about 30 bucks probass) alot to pay for something they may not eat... Same with massivore, thats about £24 here, they dont seem to do a small size for testing. Only reason I wanted them to surface feed was that i bought a pack of hikari food sticks, not realising they floated lol. I have a pack of hikari sinking on the way soon though. Once they arrive i wills ee how they like them and then go down the road of starving them if i need to.... Id love the 180g... will mean more saving cus id need the cabinet too, the 135 would go on an existing cabinet i have,,, would be worth waiting for though im sure!!! My delhezi arrived in the mail today and he looks effin awesome, better than the ornate i think (or maybe its jus cus its new lol) doesnt seem any the worse for wear for being sent through the mail.. Odd thing i have noticed though... the ornate and the senegal had nothing really to do with one another, if their paths crossed they would ignore each other. The delhezi however has moved into the same cave as the ornate and its liek they are old buddies lol. I have even seen the ornate out and about more since the new arrival, maybe thats coincidence, who knows.. £40 well spent though, i know that!

Sometimes I can be dyslexic and I thought it said Platypus not Polypterus LOL!

I was like wow these guys are nuts how big a tank is this going to be!

Will get some pics tomoro... missed an opportunity earlier, chomping on mealworms and loving them it seemed. At least i know he is eating! Has anyone fed wax worms to their polys? i saw some today and wondered if theyd be a good diet addition.

Hmmmmn reckon a platypus would be an awesome aquarium inmate lol
