if a crane feels hungry and knows you have fish you really cant do nothin but pray. seen 1 take 2 24" in one sitting

a little late in my reply but as long as the pond and the koi are moderately sized they should be fine from any bluegill attack's i would imagine it would be the same as blues and carp in the wild plus i almost forgot my favorite fish was a bluegill i had him in a tank with two gigantic goldfish that started out as carnival fish and they were fine

I good native and my favorite bait fish thw Spotfin Shiner not to be confused with spottail minnows. These spotfins are great adn if you have any type of falls they like to jump against the current like salmon jumping up stream.
