Just bought a probably barely pushing 2" fahaka puffer from my LFS and all I know is that he gets about 12-14"(according to the approximate lenth between my LFS owners hands LMAO), likes shrimp and I have to get him something hard like snails once in a while to keep his teeth down.

Always wanted a Mbu but the only one my LFS has is a 20" @ $750. But this guy caught my eye.

Seeing I have him in a bare 29g and he will be going into a bare 75g when he grows I was wondering how fellow MFK'ers have their puffer tanks set up?

It's the GF's fish(my tank though:D) and she is bent on trying to get it a tankmate no matter what I tell her so I was thinking of trying these clown barbs that my LFS has seeing they are fast and cheap. But I hear barbs can nip also. If nipping happens I want it to be the other way around. If not them maybe a silver datnoid?

It might be pointless to try tankmates but if I can prevent a fish death I can seperate.

Not an expert, but I'd think it need a bigger tank (greater than 75G) when it grows up... something like 120G long tank for your fahaka puffer

Might have that by then... I have a 120g that I will need to upgrade here to a 240 around next tax time:D.

The LFS owner said a 75 would be good.

Thanks for the heads up too.

Don't ever believe anything a LFS tells you. They're in the business to sell stuff.

Tell your gf that putting fish in with a fahaka is way too dangerous to try. Even if you can get it to get along with some fish (which is highly unlikely), they will still get wounds from it. My fahaka is by far the most aggressive fish I have ever seen and/or kept. As for size, mine grew from about 3'' to almost 11'' in a little under a year. The bigger the tank the better, but a tank at least 18'' wide and 5 feet long is preferable. 120G is the usual suggeseted minimum.

Cool thanks guys.

Is shrimp as a staple, BW's, and snails a good enough diet??

I also have some massivore pellets that he took a chunk out of but after that he left it alone.

Why bare??? BB makes a fish very uncomfortable, since he is constantly seeing a moving reflection underneath them. It looks like a predator coming up from below to them. Nevermind that the substrate contains a majority of the biological bacteria needed to support this massive fish.

As far as feeding: http://www.**************.com/forum/library/category/feeding/
