New to rays

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
If he did do that he was putting those rays at risk for as long as he's been ray keeping. Rays are senstive to just about anything, and clorine water is one of them. For me as I live in a house where space is plenty, I'm able to treat my tap water in drums and use accordingly. However, there once was a time when I lived in an apartment and water changes were direct from the tap and I added the proper doses of prime into the tank first, then slowly added tap water. Everyone has their own system and if you decide to keep these rays you'll eventually create your own wc regime. My advice is to do what's easiest for you.

As for acclimating, I always do a slow drip. This will help the rays get use to the temp, ph and other water params in the main tank. Do this by placing an airhose to the main tank and siphon to a bucket. Drips will be fast and the quickest hack will be to knot the airline to the proper drip speed. I normally drip for 45 to and hour.

I forgot what I've read on your other post but did you mention your filtration system? If not, please do and we'll have heaps of people adding their great advice and suggestions. Install an app called whatsapp and I'll give you my number so we can communicate live if or when you need assistance. And it's free. Wait, maybe it's a dollar. I forget.

Thanks for the reply pal and Ye that would be great ! Ye about my filteration I want to build a fluidised sump but I've got a 125gallon at the moment and in a few months building a 8 x 3 I don't want to build 2 sumps, would it be better building the sump for the 8 x3 and using it on the 125gallon until I get the bigger tank built ?

I don't see an issue with that as long as you have the space under our 125. So, when you get these rays, what type of filtration do you have today for the 125? Can you post some pics of the rays so we can see if they're healthy?

The 125 I bought came with 2 aqua one external filters would they be sufficient ? Or would it be best to go the the fluidised sump.
Sorry How do you post pics ha

Beautiful rays! I'm sure Aqua One canisters will be good enough for a really short-term basis until you have the funds to upgrade to a better canister like an Eheim 2260 of fx series. More importantly is what's in those canisters? Remember those rays will throw out heaps of ammonia so if you have the means go ahead and upgrade to something better until your sump is ready (and quality media like bio-home is recommended). This is just my opinion on Aqua one for long term ray keeping.

Thanks for the advice it means a lot mate and they will be another month till they come so I've got time to build a sump, what size sump to recommend for a 8 x 3 x 3 ? And how much k1 ?

I'd do no less than 100 gallon sump on an 8 × 3. Bigger is always better. How much K1 to use depends on how big the chamber is you build to hold it. 70% K1 to 30% water is the rule, in a 100 gallon sump I'd make the chamber for the K1 around 40 gallons or so. That would leave room for your mechanical filtration and pumps, heaters etc.
