New to Rope Fish - help on set up

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
magpie magpie teach me your ways yoda :) lol

there are still 2 small tetras managing to stay alive in the tank with her, they will stay in the 10 gal after i move Beamer to a bigger tank. tank mate sizes will definitely be a top priority along with compatibility in the future. this has also been a big lesson on impulse purchase of fish and listening to an lfs employee. i have never bought a fish i didn't already intend on buying, so this was a first for me and it was a hard lesson in some ways. plus listening to the employee and not doing a quick search on my phone was a hard lesson learned as well. but this all helped me find this forum and learn so much more so that i can not only give my rope a happy life, but all my fish in general a better life. so until i get the bigger tank, hopefully sooner rather than later, i'm enjoying the activity going on in the tank and the beauty of the rope gliding and weaving so gently through her new home.

Impulse is bad, but more ropes aren't :p

It's really nice when a tank works out, I love seeing people take advice and see it work! :D

For hand feeding, once she is coming out when food goes in the tank, you just put a piece in your fingers near where she is. And be patient. Once she trusts you it will be easy. As soon as I opened the lids on my tank in the evening, the ropes would come out looking for me, checking the surface out. :)

Today she stayed by the tank wall when I came up to her. Put my finger slowly near her outside the tank and moved it around slowly. She actually moved her head up and down and around to follow my finger, it was so cute! I never had a fish interact like that! So, tonight I gave hand feeding a try, just to get started. Thawed the tilapia in the bloodworm juices and did as magpie magpie had suggested. She was curious, she kept looking at it and me but no go this time around. I stayed in one spot for 20 min. 10 min after I walked away, she ate. Will do it again next feeding. But that was fun watching her curiosity :)

magpie magpie quick question, how often should I be feeding the rope tilapia or any food in general? i don't want to over feed her, but i don't want to under feed her either so she doesn't go after the piggies. she has so far been leaving them alone, although tonight she whipped 2 of them in the head to get them away from her pellets lol

I've never had a rope b4. If there's a half, or 1/4 inch diameter opening, or even smaller. Is it 100% likely they will find that opening sooner or later???? If so, that's hella stressful. Lol

not sure on the percentage rate, i have had mine for a almost a month now. i have all openings secured, first thing i did when i got it. plus i keep my water about 3 or 4 inches below full level and my lid is weighted. the only stressful part i have encountered thus far has been her eating the eye of one of my cory cats. but that has been deterred now very well. :) they are rather enjoyable to have and fun to watch.
