New to Rope Fish - help on set up

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
If you don't get any burrowing fish or Malaysian Trumpet snails as suggested just use your gravel vac it may take a little practice but is very effective as stated also. I personally have PFS and Play sand in a couple of aquariums and use my gravel vac on 2 of them.

Dead organic matter will accumulate over time in the sand, creating a rather toxic environment if left stagnant. This goes for all types of sand as well as for gravel, to a lesser extent. Finer grained and heavy sand gets compacted faster.

The sand snail species I keep are Thiara winterii and Thiara scabra, as well as Melanoides tuberculata. I find Thiara species to be somewhat more effective than MTS, although they reproduce more slowly. They look interesting as well.

I have 1-3 inches of sand in my tanks, and i never have a problem, as they all have snails.

I couldn't find any Thiara for sale how much do they usually sell for?

I bought the Thiara winterii at about 50 cent a piece, while the Thiara scabra cost me about 20 bucks for 10 snails. They're live-bearers and reproduce readily just like the related MTS, so with a little patience you would be getting a lot for your money.

the only problem I see in my tank is my L264 Sultan who likes to kill the mystery snails so would probably kill the Thiara too which makes the slow reproduction a problem
