new to salt

so...is it easier to start a small or large saltwater tank? Because I have two tanks I could possibly use, my brand new never used rimless 31"x30"x15" (LxWxH) or my 120gallon tank, 4'x2'x2' drilled tank which currently houses a breeding pair or JD's. Is there anything to watch out for when converting a freshwater tank to saltwater?

Also, I'm looking at starting out with fish and live rock only, or I should say "sea creature" and live rocks, no corals at the moment.

I was afraid you'd say that! haha, but what about converting from fresh to salt? anything I should do differently when cleaning the tank? Only reason I ask is because I had a friend tell me something in the freshwater tanks could cause problems in saltwater...but I'm not sure.

If I turn the used 120gallon to salt, I will empty all the rocks/sand and not use it. I will buy new sand, live sand if needed, and live from. Will empty or simply build/redesign a new sump, so I guess just cleaning the glass and all as I will scrape all current algae off. I can't remember exactly what my friend said, something about mercury maybe staying in a tank that use to be freshwater. I'm assuming if I just clean it really well, with fish safe products then I should be good to go?

nah man your good. I dumped a couple FW tanks and didn't even spray them out. Just dumped them, got out as much sand as i could and filled. Never heard of this mercury thing

Might have been copper to be honest with ya! But I do appreciate all the help and info, now I just need to get movin on it. Know good places online to get live sand and live rock? my lfs is charging 15 or so for a 1lb of cured live rock, that isnt going to happen for my 120gallon!
