New to saltwater and have some questions.

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Well I did feel kind of hurt but I like honesty and your information. But ya, so this is what I have now.

-10gal tank
-20lbs of live rock and sand
-And a pc 2x32wat 50/50
-AC50 with sponges and ceramic rings.

And now for my questions..........agian xP

1-So is this a good setup??

2-How does purple up work to grow the purple alge on my rocks.

3-what other things should I buy to maintain my tanks and help it prosper??

4-And are these okay to add to the tank-when its good to go that is.
-Zoanthids
-Entacmaea quadricolor
-Tridacna crocea
-Lysmata amboinensis
-Amphiprion ocellaris

You should really think of a much stronger light if you're gonna grow corals. Using a AC50 with sponges and ceramic rings isn't that great.

I'd check that out and probably would go with a 70 at the least.
You should skip on the purple up as coraline becomes a pain and its always best to do things naturally. And I'd really say no to the bubble tip anemone. They get bigger than a 10 gallon can handle and are EXTREMELY difficult to keep. Expensive too. Lastly you should post in the salt section as you'll get much better response. Best of luck

it sounds a good set up but i would invest in 2 t5s because the corals will have a hard time and you wouldnt be able to keep much if anything with a 50/50s they just dont give out the needed light out put for corals

now the AC 50 with sponges and rings well i would remove the media and replace it with live rock rubble as it will provide a much more better filtration for the system or even mod it into a refugim its simple and very effective also very benerficeal for a small set up the 20lb of live rock in the system provides most of the filtration unlike in freshwater where you would have a pump pushing the water through different medias to clean and remove debris from the water

algae

http://saltaquarium.about.com/od/aboutcorallinealgae/ss/coralline.htm

coraline can be a real pain when it starts growing on the glass sometimes a razor blades the only way at removing it

im glad your skipping the skimmer their really not needed on 10g nanos as the weekly maintance does the trick better :D

addatives you can buy ammonnia for starting the cycle but really you can just add a few fish flakes or a prawn or such to start the cycle
eventually when you have corals you may want to add calcium additives but check your calcium first but most aquatic stores will give you advice on if you need calcium

-Zoanthids = coral
-Entacmaea quadricolor = bubble tip anemone
-Tridacna crocea = crocea clam
-Lysmata amboinensis = skunk cleaner shrimp
-Amphiprion ocellaris = ocellaris clownfish

zoanthids are perfectly fine as long as its mature

bubble tip anemone agen fine as long as its mature not just cycled fully mature

crocea clam very hard to keep in a 10g nano but not impossible as long as its requirements are given

skunk cleaner shrimp great for the set up

ocellaris clownfish great clown fish these can go in when its cycled it doesnt have to be mature for these fish

i wouldnt say bigger than a 10g can handle but as i have stressed 100s f times their hard to keep

better responses :WHOA::WHOA::WHOA: ill wait and see hahaha

just wondering thought why would he need an AC 70 when the main filtration on his system should be the live rock so the AC wouldnt make much of a difference thats why i suggested modding into a refugium really i dont see a need for a AC 70

I see so lets say I got with live rock, Do I just get as much rock I can fit in their?? Also I thought it was 5watts per gal of water??

live rock 20lb of live rock and sand would be well anuff to provide a natural filtration i wouldnt say you need more but modding the AC 50 into a refugium would be very benerficeal to the system much more than the AC with sponges and rings

5 watts per G is just about as useful as the 1" per G rule different lights penertrate the water differently also different lights have different out puts in luminars

you could keep a few very low light corals under the 50/50s but you want clams and anemones which would die very quickly under 50/50s

t5s have a huge differemt light out put than 50/50s they may be the same ammount of wats but they are a totally different light out put and they penertrate the water much better

on ebay you can pick up the t5s very cheaply also one of the t5s could be used over the refugium AC to provide algae growth and other benerficeal things
like a refugium will provide a place for pods and they are very benerficeal for the fish and clams, anemones

as i said keep the questions coming as its better to ask than to make mistakes

Well if you've ever had a AC 50 its pretty darn small. over half of the back will be devoted to a sponge to trap particles so it really won't leave you much room in there. Even my AC 70 can only fit 2 fist fulls of chaeto so imagine the AC 50
