I am picking up a 125 gallon salt water tank for 400$$. It is coming with a lot of live rock, a sump (unknown size), a protein skimmer, 2 built in overflows, and the stand. He has been keeping fish for awhile in that set up he said. Is there anything else I need? I need all the advice you guys have to offer cause I have never done salt before...

Heater...What sort of lights?

Is it coming stocked? What are you planning on doing with the tank?

Okay heater, he said he'd through in the lights if I needed them. It is not coming stocked and I have no idea what im doing with it. My dad wants it to have invertebrates in it, so I guess nothing too predatory. Sooo... oh he also said something about having put copper in the tank or something like that.

Most marine anything won't tolerate any copper based stuff. I'm new myself, but I'm pretty sure. Sounds like the tank should be cleaned right out and started from fresh. Probably best anyways. Who knows what other crap is in there.

If it was me, and I'm anal, I would give it all a rinse and cycle the tank from fresh. Better the extra work and time cycling than risking the health of most of your tank inhabitants. Even when I switched from fresh to salt, never using any type of meds in the past, I made sure everything was cleaned well.

Us reefers are anal as well.

I would scrub the crap out of anything...toss the sand...the water...and even the rock. Copper meds can linger. Killing inverts for a long time after the memory of dosing the copper has passed.
