I have kept Freshwater for about a year and a half and I am in the process now of getting my first larger tank for FW. However upon skimming my local fish club forums I come across the following post and he wants $100 for everything - I jumped on it.

I have a black 29 gal reef tank for sale with matching double black iron stand(brand new). It includes glass top, 2 strip lights (basic), Penguin 100 bio wheel filter, SeaClone skimmer (rated to 60 gallons), 40 lbs of very nice live rock(some pieces with nice sponge growth), 2 power heads, digi thermometer, and crushed coral substrate. The stand can fit a 20L below which could be included and used as a refugium. There are also some very nice frags of different mushrooms anemones, 1 frag of sun coral and one frag of some other red coral. Fish included are 1 domino damsel, 1 dottyback, 1 large cleaner shrimp, and well over 10 blue foot hermit crabs. Also, I will include plenty food, medications, air bubbler for mixing water, hydrometer, and scraper.

I wasn't planning on going SW so soon, but to me that was a deal that I couldn't pass up on. The only kicker is that he needs it gone asap so I don't have the time to research as much as I would like. I am basically going to help him take it down and put it back up at my house the same way. In doing so, is there anything that I should be aware of? Any additional equipment I should get ordered today so I will have it when I get the tank?

I am in the process of reading other posts regarding this subject on these forums, but due to work getting in the way I can't read as much as I would like, so any and all advice, tips, etc. are appreciated.

you should be good for a little while it sounds like, i would highly recommend going to reefcentral.com they have tons of info on saltwater and reef aquariums. the only things i see you needing right off the bat are some test kits, to test alk, calcium, nitrate, nitrite, phosphate, and ammonia. depending how long its been, you may need to be thinking of some salt, i prefer instant ocean. so that you can do a water change, most prefer to use ro/di water. i would be curious what the lights are as well

nice deal
the 40 lb of rock would be worth more than 100 itself

I would pick up some dKH buffer, with the test kits. Can be powdered or liquid. If the rock starts growing your Carbonate Hardness (KH) will start to drop and bring pH with it. I personally prefer bi-onic two part solution. Sounds like you got a great deal.

The seaclone will work, but in my experiences they are not really that good once you get things started you may want to consider getting a better skimmer.

Thanks guys, I go pick up tomorrow and my focus for the next month is just maintaining. Once I get comfortable with that then I do plan on upgrading (was already planning on upgrading lights but will upgrade the skimmer as well).

bring back pictures when you get it up and running, and if you need, post your water perams and im sure someone around here can tell you where you stand and whats ahead of you. PS i would ask the guy when the last time he did a water change was, that way you can keep it in your thoughts.

I have a water question...

For topping off, is it best to used RO or Distilled water?

And for water changes same question, is it best to use RO or Distilled for mixing with salt?

Thanks

Here's a pic of it as I'm setting it up...
