what is a good species of snails to keep with piranha so the algae of the tank is kept under control.. thanks for your help

There is no snail that will live with a pirahna and keep algae under control. They poop as much as they eat and a pirahna wouldn't get along with any snail. They would need to be fed and cannot live only on algae. You should figure out what is causing your algae instead. Overfeeding, too few water changes, too much light...

You could try a few Malysian Trumpet snails? (no guarantee though. but those would be a shot)

I have them with my ceylon puffers (t.fluvialitis) and they seem to survive (some of them lol)

hey js97, that's actually a pretty good idea. introduce a few to the tank and they should breed. they might be too small for the pirahna to eat and they would graze on the algae. if the algae goes away, they'll stop breeding or die off if it's totally gone.

nice job, js97! i hadn't thought of that.

hah.. only reason i thought of it was cause i seem to have accidentally 'bred' these little critters... dropped around 6 medium ones in a 75 gallon... now i have 6 fairly large and a whole bunch of little ones... no algae though! lol

MTS would be a bad idea, as their shells are very hard and can easily rip the internal organs of the fish.

Not so true as far as the snails go. Columbian ramshorns do very well with controlling algae, and do not poop nearly that much. They are used for algae control very effectively quite frequently. As far as living with the piranha that is another store, depend on how aggressive your piranha are.

Columbian rams will of course eat algae, but they still require supplemental feeding. In my experience, they poop as much as they eat. They're as messy as an apple snail. The other issue with columbian rams is that they breed like rabbits.
