new to snails

I once purchased an "in-use" canister filter from a LPS that was going out of business. In doing so I inadvertantly introduced a colony of tiny snails about the size of mosquitos. They kept my Managuense tank spotless for over 6 years. they were too small to bother my fish and when I could see them all over I simply put a piece of spinach in the tank tied to a string and the next morning pulled a bunch out and thinned the group.

question on the breeding.. i've had 2 golden mystery snails for over a year now and have never bred. Is this unusual??

You probably have two males or two females. You can try to sex them if you like.
Hold each snail by the shell so it will open toward you. You can try this out of water as well as underwater - some snails are picky and won't open out of water. Once it opens up, hold your finger or a rock or something just beneath the snail, so that it reaches down toward the object. Then you just have to look for the penis or lack thereof. Here's a great photo guide.

was reading up on apple snails, says you can add calcium to the water to harden their shells ?? Would adding calcium to the tank affect the other fish?
