New to stingrays

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
What were the other fish that lived in the tank before the rays and how long had they been in there? I doubt 4 small motoros in a 400 gal caused an ammonia spike if the tank was established.

it could be a number of reasons.

we deff need a full water test an more specifics on setup, filtration, where they came from, how long in transit etc....

its possible... if he moved all the fish out before he got the rays what was keeping the bio filter alive?

Heres a very stupid question, but most 400gl owners have it setup for salt water. Did your buddy put freshwater rays into a saltwater tank?

BTW I was not trying to single out your buddy. Just offering a FYI, cause some people actually don't know that FW rays are illegal in some states. I am sorry if I offended you, I was just offering some info. Was I not trying to help???

Stress will keep a ray from eating as well as offering foods they are not use to. Some rays will even go on a hunger strike and not eat foods they like. Don't know what caused there death, but it had to be something in the water.

In my opinion, i will list some point that you must think of
1. Quality of water
2. Amount of the oxygen in the habitat
3. Do you ask your supplier to do the feeding show before purchase, sometime if the ray not eat since born they will not eat until they die. I have one small pup that doesn't take anything until now it still doesn't eat anything and i beleive she will die very soon.
4. May be some parasit inside

Ok I will try and answer the questions I know. Yes it was a freshwater tank. He had mostly cichlids, and a few larger Oscars. The filter was a DIY 55 gallon wet/dry. He removed the fish about 5 days prior and put them into a smaller tank. IM not sure if he continued to run the 400 gallon or not. Would water loose the bacteria after the fish are removed as Nic mentioned? Im not sure if the rays were CB or wild. I believe they were wild however.

Not sure if a 55gl WD is enough to filter a 400gl tank, was there any BIO filtration???5 days might be enough to kill off your BB. amonina spike is possible. If he stop running the 400 for 5 days before the rays were introduced then yes absolutely will the amonina sky rocket. The other thing you need to know is if the rays were eating before hand. CB or WC, if rays are not eating they will probably not eat now until they are acclimated. Another question to ask is were the rays deadly skinny looking?

The motoros where under alot of stress if they were not eating well into the fourth day which u say was when the last one died.. your friend should have tested his water when the first ray died and IMO he did not have to remove the other fish from the tank 5 days before, i wouldve removed them a few days after the rays were introduced into the tank.. Ammonia spike can be the killer but i think it is more than that.. Were did he pick up the stingrays from? and u say he had cichlids which meant he prob needed a higher ph for the cichlids. alot of FW stingrays dont do well in high PH settings.
