  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
i just set up my first salt water tank and bought 4 green chromis to cycle it... honestly, i'm growing found of them, so active and all tho at first the appear kind of bland, they have beautiful color in em blues, a bit of yellow and of coarse green. I'm glad i got these and will most likely be keeping them when i originally had planned on getting rid of em.

Yeah... I checked 'em out online, and it seems they could be kinda cool looking in a school. Good luck with you tank! Hope you can post pics on the progress!

i did not think to many people still used fish to cycle tanks[ poor fish]there are easier and cheaper ways without fish having to go thru stress and death , i know they are only chromis and all but why not throw in a couple of dead prawns

Starting to figure out where I want to go now. The rock has a bit of an infestation of glass anenomes. No biggie... nothing a crew of peppermint shrimp can't handle. Of course, that means the white spot puffer may have to go. But I'll cross that bridge once I first make sure things stablize in the tank after I get it setup Saturday afternoon, and hopefully get the fish in the tank sometime Saturday evening at the latest, once I'm sure I have the temp stabilized. Then I cross my fingers and hope that if there is any mini-cycle, the fish can handle it. Since I am bringing as much of the original water as I can with me, and keeping the live rock submerged in a rubber tote, and keeping whatever he has in the sump in the original tank water... I'm hoping to minimize any possible mini-cycle as much as possible.

Well... we'll see how Saturday goes. As we get closer, I am only getting more and more nervious! Sheesh!

Honestly, cycle was probably not the right word. The live rock i purchased came from an established tank of 6 plus months so the necessary bacteria were already present. I suppose i bought the chromis to rest my nerves. I would not have been a happy camper if i had spent $70 on some sort of reef fish only to have it die over night. The chromis have been alive and well for over a week giving me peace of heart. I do have a test kit and I used it before adding any fish and i also brought a sample to my lfs. It's just my first tank and i'd prefer to start it off on the right foot.

any news on the tank

Hmmm.... well even though you bought already established live rock.... tanks have to cycle!!! And yes i agree with buying the chromis first instead of something grand.. you must still cycle your tank... i am currently cycling a new 200 gallon salt.... i decided to go big... a great big community so my family can sit and watch the colors bloom

Great thread by the way love to see your progress

I want everyone to try to understand that, the tank that I am buying is already setup and running at another persons house, with live rock and fish in it. I'm not buying a tank, then getting established live rock from a store or something, then buying fish... all of these things are already currently together, and I'm getting the whole setup.

Now, I am only going to keep the chromis. Every other fish is going. The live rock will be covered in a rubbmeraid tote, with water that is currently in the tank. I will be putting as much of that water as I can carry, back into the tank once it is setup in my basement. And then, with only the live rock and the 4 chromis, I will moniter the levels and be sure the tank has completed it's (hopefully) mini-cycle, before beginning to slowly add other inhabitants.

I hope I am being as clear as possible on what exactly is happening, and the fact that I do understant there will be at least a mini-cycle resulting from the move. Thanks for all of the great comments and suggestions!

Oh sorry about that partner... i was refering to Skysouza... i think your tank will be.completely fine... the spike you should see is no.more.than doing a gravel syphon.... as long as the previous owner was upkeeping the tank as it should be... lol but all in all best of luck... i just finished the set up and cycle of a beautiful 160 deep dimension tank for saltwater and i am so excited to start adding some more color!!! Will post pics soon.

Oh yeah, I see... and my bad. Was definitely not trying to be snappy or anything. Sometimes, folks make comments about a post that you put on here, as if they didn't really read a thing you actually said! LOL... but yeah, I can see you weren't referring to me, so my bad on that one. Looking forward to seeing your pics!

Man... I don't know if I've ever been this nervous about something in my life! LOL...
