I am building an in wall 146 gallon tank and need some advice on what to make its home in it. I would like some neat looking fish that are relatively easy to take care of, if there is such a thing. I have been researching for the last couple of hours on how to build it and other things. What are some things i will need, lighting, filtration, and other things to take into consideration? Any advice or experience you can share will be greatly appreciated. thanks, Scott

i completly dissagree with what micahhaseman said. The larger tanks are easier to take care of and it gives you more options you should always buy the biggest tank you can afford and have space for. Building a tank takes a lot of time though let us know when your finished building and then we willl worry about stocking. As far as the actual build i am of no help to you.

well if your really new to fish you should start smaller

I agree. However, If you're willing to put the time and effort into building a suitable large tank, I would say go for it. Larger tanks often have more stable water conditions than smaller ones. As for fish, you would probably want to start off small and work your way up. Try some undemanding cichlids such as convicts.

A smaller tank? Any reason why other than easier to take care of? I am building this into the wall and this is the dimensions that will fit. I thought I would build it this big since this is kinda a one time build. Is there a way i could build this tank and start "smaller" in this size tank? Start out simple and grow into this tank as i learn more? I just hate to build this smaller and as i learn want a bigger tank and have to rip the wall out. What exactly do you mean by smaller? Thanks for your help

Yeah...start small like tetras...146 gallon full of tetras.

Thanks optimist. That is what i was hoping i could do. Is there anything i need for the cichlids? Filtration, lighting and what not? I just want to make sure i have the appropriate electrical outlets and what not in place when i build this. Thanks for all your help

Yeah go big!!!!!

And as you build take some pics and post it in the DIY (do it yourself) section we'd love to see the process.

Second.....stay around this place and you'll learn all you need to learn to start up a succesful tank. also search through the sticky's and old threads you'll learn great stuff there too.

Third......be patient.....one saying is only bad things happen fast in an aquairium (except in the building stage....get it built fast so you can get to the fish!!!!!!!!!). You'll need to make sure you learn the cycling proccess of the tank as well as compatibility of fish........all this will come in due time!!!

Bigger tanks are easier and just plain BETTER!!!!

Get your tank going and keep us updated....there is a lot of knowledge here for questions and answers if you ever get stuck.

and welcome to MFK

Thanks for the encoragement derpeder. I will start building this next week hopefully, i still have a little homework to do first. Is there anything i need to keep in mind when building the tank? Like what i will need for electrical and where the outlets will need to be? Do the cords for the filtration and lighting go to the top of the tank? Anything else you guys can share so i don't forget something while i'm building this? Thanks again guys, this is a great site.

I kept african cichlids for a few years. They are easy and breed ALOT. Very pretty fish too. South american cichlids are also great fish.

as far as filtration just make sure its rated for the gallonage of your tank. You won't need a "special" filter. There are better filters then others so do some research and pick.

Lighting: I just used regular florecent lighting. Someone else might suggest something else but I don't think any special lighting is needed for cichlids.

make sure you get a heater large enough for your gallonage as well. cichlids are tropical and like the temp around 80 ferhenheit.

as far as the fish you want for sure though I would just look around and see what you love. You have a lot of options with a big tank like that. Then ask about the fish you want here at mfk. If its too difficult someone will let you know...... but go with what you definately want. (little extra .02)
