New to the game and I have questions

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I would get a group of EBJD's, maybe 7-10, that way you have better chances of healthy specimens living to adulthood, also the chances are that you will end up with a pair
7-10 EBJD is gonna cost a pretty penny. Not something your average beginner is looking to spend I think.

i second a chocolate, i had some and sold them off and i very much regret it. great fish, very peaceful for a cichlid. i would totally recommend it for a beginner large-ish cichlid. would fit well in a 90g. dont know about the ebjd's havent kept them.

good call on your part skipping a pair of Oscars in a 90g, :) lot of good other options been mentioned.

Keep in mind the typical behavior you want to see in your tank. While dempseys are beautiful, they like to hide too. We have a female that spends most her time defending her cave. But the male we used to have was an attention hog for anyone standing by the tank.
I think you might have better luck with electric blue texas than the EBJD. EBJDs are $40 where I'm at. After the 6th one perished after 2 months we gave up on them. We have 2 electric blue texas we are growing out and one them is looking fantastic.

Only way I'm aware to get one with the blue gene is from an established breeder who knows what is in their gene pool. I've seen a place online in Florida that sells/ships blue gene dempseys. And the percentage of offspring to be EB...is what?? 25% I think. (Someone can correct if I'm wrong).

What about T-Bar Cichlids? Or Rotkeil Severums?

Good luck with whatever you choose.

I agree with all of MP cichlids advice,I would say a 90 is too small for a pair of Oscars.
Have you seen chocolate cichlids? They get to a nice size are slow moving and peaceful and have the same pet like qualities of an Oscar.

We've got a breeding pair of Chocolates in a 75 gallon tank with some Emperor tetras and orange laser cories. They are a pretty cool fish. One of our favorites, for sure.
