Hey everyone! Thought I would start out by saying I am new to the site (registered while in the airport). Been looking for a good site for a while now and hope to find it here.

Soon I will be getting a 75 gallon tank. I already have a 55 with African Cichlids, and really want something mean, and predatory for the 75 gallon. I know that if I wanted something really big, 75 is too small. I wish I had the room for something MUCH larger because I would probably house an Arowana or Gar.

I was wanting some suggestions on a highly predatory fish that I could house in 75 gallon tank. Something rare and unusual looking. I could just suck it up and buy an Oscar, but they are so common. Like I said, I am itching for something rare and MEAN.

Any suggestions would be great! Thanks!

That would be nice, but I wouldn't really have room for something huge. The reason I said a 75 gal. is bc I have the choice to buy one for cheaper off a friend. However, the space I am putting it in is about 7 feet wide. I could technically get a much larger tank.

But even then, 7 feet is not enough for when something like an Arowana or Gar get large.

7 feet and an arowana wouldnt be to bad, bit depends on how deep the tank is.

very true, but to be clear, im assuming you dont know, sorry if you do, he means deep by front to back how deep the tank is, not top to bottom. but you could do a standard 125 in that space. but lets work with what you got. you could get a school of exadons. theyre pretty cool. dont have any myself but they are def cool fish.

standard 125 72" x 18" X 22" i think.

There are bunch of cichlids that will work in a 75g and are rarer and more predatory than an oscar. Some of the smaller guapotes, like C. grammodes or C. islantum come to mind. You could also try some of the medium sized pike cichlids of the saxatilis group.

If you like the look of gars, one option is Ctenolucius hujeta. They are a highly predatory characin that looks like a gar but is more flexible and doesn't grow as big. A small school of acestrorhycus FW barracudas could also work. Other options include a school of exodons, a serrasalmus piranha, red wolf fish, an arrowhead or congo puffer...

loads of possible options for rare, mean fish out there that will work well in a 75. No need to get something that will ultimately outgrow your tank just because this is "monster" fish keepers.

Thank you much for all the help so far. I will start researching all your suggestions tmrw. :)

Part of me wants to just throw down and get a 125, but like I said, the 75 is practically right there, great condition, and great price.
