If you like the look of gars, one option is Ctenolucius hujeta. They are a highly predatory characin that looks like a gar but is more flexible and doesn't grow as big. A small school of acestrorhycus FW barracudas could also work. Other options include a school of exodons, a serrasalmus piranha, red wolf fish, an arrowhead or congo puffer...

I really like the look of the Ctenolucius Hujeta.

For some reason, I can't find anything on the acestrorhycus FW barracudas. Any idea where I can find some info on it?

The Red Wolf Fish is also cool.

All three have the elongated bodies that I am looking for. I suppose I should have mentioned that earlier. : p I really like the look of that style of fish. One reason I was interested in an Arowana or Gar at first.

I am going to do some researching on the Hujeta and Red Wolf. Would love to know more about this Barracuda. Can't seem to even find a pic of it though.

Also, what do you guys know of Pike? I have seen while browsing that Northern Pike are often kept as pets.

hey and welcome

edit: wasnt going to say any fish but then as i scrolled up i saw hujeta, mine r soppy as anything but look mean lol
i loooove those fish!

Pike, way way way too big if its a northern.

Why not this fish - Dimidiochromis compressiceps - the ultimate predator for my money. Males are incredible. Combine it with some loaches, sand substrate, lava rocks and bingo, instant ultimate display! :)

So I have been looking around some more and think I found what I am looking for.

I have narrowed it down to these...

Boulengeralla lateristriga "Striped Pike Characin"

Crenicichla Johanna "Red Finned Pike"

Red Wolf Fish

Maybe a Polypterus Senegalus "Senegal Bichir"

All of these, from what I have read, get just over a foot long. Let me know what you guys think.

oscar's arent aggressive. i'd suggest a lima shovelnose, not tiger shovelnose. and 7 feet is adequate for a jardini arowana, maybe a silver

I know they aren't aggressive. What I meant was that if I can't find something aggressive that I can get, I would probably just get an Oscar.

Thanks for the suggestions, I will check them out.

Sorry, my bad - I misspelled the genus. It's acestrorhynchus. Here's a good resource to get you started:

It's http://www.angelfire.com/biz/piranha038/Tom_Lorenz_Aces.html

Regarding your list of fish, all would work individually. The C. johanna can be mean, so I'd hesitate to combine them with the others. But a planted tank with a couple of striped pike characins, a red wolf and sen would be awesome. Good luck.

Ctenolucius hujeta are also good
