The syringe draws out the air in the overflow , effectively starting the siphon...
The check valves only allow the air/water to move in one direction, so as he pushes and pulls the plunger, it removes the trapped air...simple yet effective.

great idea. could you possibly replace the syringe with one of those squeeze bulb things they use to suck mucus out, almost like a blood pressure or organ apparatus?
