I spend a lot of time on lake Toho everytime I am done there because I have family on the lake. I also occasionally go out of Melbourne on charters and have gone out of ft. Myers beach several times but never catch anything good there besides grunts and under size grouper. I hear the fishing is better further out but have never done that. I am starting to get down to the keys quite a bit and will be trying some bridge and pier fishing in march as well as hitting Miami canals again. I will be down there for 2 1/2 weeks in march and don't have the whole time planned yet by any means.

The 6500 is a great reel. I own several. Mainbutter is right about the large baits. If you're going to use it for tossing bulldogs or cranking 10's you should expect it only to last one season. I use my old ones for parts. They are very easy to work on. Make sure to keep it clean and oil it often. I have stepped up to the Abu 7000 for the large baits. The size is a little intimidating at first but the bigger spool and power handle make a world of difference. You can put a larger crank on the 6500. I think its a must for muskie. You may also want to consider ditching the ugly stick and putting that Abu on a decent 8' medium heavy action rod. I would also suggest nothing less than 80 lb braid (I use 100) and 135lb florocarbon leader simply to respect the fish. Also, be sure to check the housing screws often for tightness. There are three of them on the crank side of the reel which hold the case together. For some reason they tend to loosen with heavy use. Hope you enjoy your reel. Don't forget to post your monster catches!!!

Great tips. Thank you.

I am not terribly familiar with musky fishing and lure sizes so bear with me, but there are some big musky and pike lakes within short driving distances. I am most accustomed to fishing spinning reels and using the bait casters to let live and cut bait sit. So all of these tips are very helpful.
