i went on a shopping spree this weekend, and finally picked up a Tsn
he is currently about 4 1/2 - 5" long, not doing a whole lot.
what type of envirnoments suit them best? and how much/how often should he eat? they said hes on feeders now, aprx how long until i can switch him over?
growth rates?

Great pick up!!!:naughty:
They are best kept on live food till over 12 inchs! they are fast growers but not as fast as the redtail cats! when under 12 inch should be fed atleast every second day after that can be twice a week! about the time they are 24 inchs can go once a week! A small one can live for a while in a 50 gal but remember the width and lenght is more inportant than the depth and aventually will need to be housed in a indoor pond once they are between 24 and 48 inchs the bigger the space the better!! They get along with each other two is not much more work than one! They can be skitish at times I had one that evan going into the fish room would run for cover and mess up the tank and others that were gental giants! they are ambush preds and will lie in wait for something to come by! they get very active once the lights go out and start to hunt around! They generally dont swim around as much as the redtail cats! they also arnt big on hiding! Growth rate depends on a few things # 1 is food the amounts and how often! space availible and temp are the three things that I have found make the difference!
Hope this helps alittle!!
thanks P.N:)

Switch him over to pellets as fast as you can, if he wont eat them, fast him for a few days and try again. If you want you can feed him every 2nd day. This will cut down on costs and he'll still grow just as fast if you were to feed him every day.

Expect FAST growth rates. This means over 2ft long in well under 2 years. They grow 3ft.

With decor, provide him with shelter and excellent filtration. Apart from thast, the decor is up to you.
If you

any type of environment would suffice it in many ways...its could have many rock works some vegetation but not densly planted...like that you could also have a couple of cavings to go in...and or you can just have it with no decorations...

ideal temperatures? tankmates?
right now he's gonna grow in one of my smaller tanks, would he get along ok in my larger native tank (bass, p.bass, perch, pickerel, chanelcat) ??

In my experiance TSN ( I have raised quiet a few from 2 inchs and up) do not thrive on pellets at a small stage! Bringing home a new TSN and starving him right away is not good advice:confused: The fish will be stressed and to add to that deprived him of food? he nedds to settle down before he can be switched to non live foods such as shrimp, shrimp pellets, dew worms, some people feed beef and chicken heart! A really good food is Hikari carnivore sinking pellets! i used this with all my big cats!

the other fish should be ok untill he got bigger and becomes food! I found with my channel cat would pick on the TSN!
most of my big cats are kept at 80 and if not eating will go up two degrees!
as for tank mate most non agressive fish that are way to big to go into mouth! mine lives with a redtail and a RipSaw!

an ideal temperature should be 76-84 degrees...and as for tankmates...it could be anything big enough to not get eaten...like the silver arowana, oscars, peacock bass, jardini arowana, just about anything bigger than it is as but its only good if they dont think of you TSN as food.Well as for those other larger native fishes it might just depends on how big those guys are....just make sure they arent too big for the lil TSN you got yourself

TSNs aren't aggressive so they can be kept with many fish as long as they can't be eaten think twice when picking fish these guys have huge mouths

get him off feeders as soon as you can not only are feeders not a very good food but the are $$$ it takes alot to feed these fish try cheaper foods like fish fillets, shrimp, worms ,squid ,krill when smaller and pellets if you can get them to eat them

and they get huge more like 4 feet and over 5 feet long in the wild so an adult would be able to eat your perch and mabye your pickerel depends mabye not a chain pickerel but grass or red fin pickerel would be lunch
