she is allergic to cats, scared of hamster/gerbils, we cant have dogs where we live (rental house), she doesnt really seem to want to hold a turtle or play with it she just likes watching them allot. she even acts like she is a turtle in the bath tub or when we take her to the local pool. there has been an aquarium in our house her whole life so fish are kinda boring to her. i am about to just let my wife make the decision and go with it.

I might add that after any questioning, and she still wants a turtle, there are better choices than a box or sideneck. Again, it all depends on what you want IN a pet, not just a passing impulse. But still, the traits that the overhwelming vast majority of little kids want in their companions are 99% of the time unfulfilled in turtles. You want the easiest pet, and she probably wants the most fun, and I doubt a turtle could give that to either of you at the moment. Also, you know about the 4 inch law correct? Of course, thats only for turtles and doesnt apply to other herps.

Dude, if he don't want it anymore in about a year or two, he could always donate it to Ruggero Deodato for his upcoming sequel.

Okay, okay, I am not as sadistic as the above sentence make me seem. Really, consider yourself, do you really want to give your daughter a pet? If you really like turtles, and she like turtles, then I don't see a problem with it.

Go for the species YOU want to keep, not the species your daughter want to keep and check on the life span as well. Just don't get a species that you can't house properly.

i am looking at the african sideneck because from what i have read about it, a 75 gallon tank is plenty big enough for it. it would only be in a 20L until spring. so if my wife says OK, then i will go this week to pick one up. and if for some reason down the road we dont want it anymore, there are plenty of lps in town that would take it.

Too bad you don't live close to where I am or anywhere near the other herpers up here in Alberta. I could arrange for you and your daughter to handle and see some of the herps in person. Maybe there is someone in VA with enough contact that might be willing to do the same?

I remember I was obsessed with turtles and lizards when I was little, then I got to handle them... and found out I enjoyed snakes more than I do of the other herptiles.

yeah i know about the under 4inch for educational purposes only. im not sure why she wants a turtle so bad, i just kow that she asks everyday for one. i have started to want one just from doing research on them. so who knows

the lps will get turtles out of their tank and let her hold them, she is very good with them. i take her with me everytime i go for fish supplies and that is always the first thing she asks about.

Oh, you replied at the same time I did! lol Well now I can adress your reply.

I very firmly beleive that herps are the best pets for kids. I wasnt about to suggest a mammal or bird.

Ok, you really want a turtle. You're going to have to build a pond, or a very expensive tank. EIther that or a very very ugly stock tank. I doubt your landlord will let you modify the house (ours doesnt, we rent too). We were almost getting a tegu, but we arent allowed to build things in the backyard (like a large cage).

Pets are the best way to teach kids responsiblilty if you go about it correctly. Sure, parents need to know the care and maybe intervene if something goes wrong. But an easy, fun pet is a godsend to little kids. And since you CAN hold a turtle and not a fish, I doubt she will be satisfied watching it (not as fun in either aspect as a fish). She will most likely want to hold it at one point.

Anyway, I don't know your daughter, so I have no idea of her personallity or what she really wants. If in the end after all this she STILL wants a turtle and youre ready to commit, there are much better species of pet turtles than the ones you suggested.

GOSH! You got 3 replies in the time I got one! Ugh, now I have to reply again! lol

Either way, expose her to the other herptiles. :D You never know if she will like those guys more than the turtles. Turtles are still cool to me every time I see them and handle them, I just prefer other animals over them.

:ROFL:I am sure loconorc knows this: I used to hate cockroaches, then I started keeping them as feeders and I loooooove them now. If I haven't been exposed to them, I wouldn't have so many different colonies right now.

Haha roaches arent the best pets for kids! lol Well maybe the easiest :P

Yeah, I agree with you though. If I may, I could suggest some other herps that are great for kids. You can show her those and she might change her mind, for all of your sakes.
