New turtle setup

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
The setup posted is ok looking but not much swimming space.

From my understand UVB cannot penetrate through glass so even if you sit it's tank next to the window it'll not be receiving the UVB rays it needs.

Here's a picture of my Diamondback terrapins' setup for an idea.

awesome, thanks for the pics and advice. I hope to find a map or painted turtle from an awesome aquarium we have here in Waterbury.

I am thinking of using a 20 Long I have lying around and getting a mud or map turtle. Or maybe a painted. I had a RES as a kid and he grew huge, so I know how that goes.

So I need a good light and I'd love to be able to put some live plants in the tank.

question on wood, do you mean "home depot" wood or tree wood? I always thought contruction wood will kill a pet.

I do believe painteds grow pretty big too not positive though.
Westerns can get large but mostly they tend to be on the smallish side. The smallest of them all is the southern painted wich hardly reaches 15cm. One important point is that if you want painteds you should get a yearling ,babys are very small and can be quite delicate. But also to any turt you want a yearling its a much wiser investiment than a newborn one.

You can use aquarium wood and non toxic wood. Oak is a good choise. Dont use pine or other resinous wood

Also dont forget to scrub any wood you put in the tank and make shure it hasnt been exposed to quemicals
