I have picked up a group of 6 umbees, they are about 2-3" long. They all tolerated each other fine until a few days ago. One has grown much quicker than the rest and has started to develop red on its face and spangles on its fins, it constantly beats the crap out of all the other umbees. Its a real bully, the other 5 umbees spend all their time hiding behind rocks up the other end of the tank. I wanted to grow them out to a size where I could sex them and keep a male. But now im not sure if I can keep them all in the same tank due to the aggression.

Can anyone help me sex the largest one? If its a male I will remove the others before they get killed.

Pics below, Thanks for any help.

They are in a 4x2x2. I have grown out a similar sized group of festae in this tank before with no major aggression issues. They just defended their territory from each other. Im surprised how aggressive this little one is. It wants the whole tank for itself

Looking good, I would leave them alone. You might loose one from aggression but I doubt it. That's a good size tank for grow out. And there is a good chance the bully is a male but I can't sex with those pics yet.

By just looking at the attitude and the growing pace we can not say the bully is male, school of my last Salvini frys, the bully and the most growed out fry was female and still i kept her. The bigger the fry the more bully he/she will be IMO

very true. But if it wants the whole tank to itself, then it might be a male.

I have 6 umbees of the same size 2- 3.5" with 10 1-1.5" Festaes. The 3.5" is the biggest and is king of course but does not want the whole tank. I think it's a female due to it being yellow. ???

A quick update....

The bully is still growing much quicker than the rest and is still beating up the other umbees.
Should I still leave them all together? As the smaller ones really are having a hard time.
Any ideas what sex it is yet?
Its colour does vary a lot depending on its mood.

I don't care what everyone else thinks. If you get a fish looking like the one in your last pic, it's time to do something.
It looks like about one, or two beatings away from death.
