New Umbee Growouts Chaos!

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
^Agreed. Time to separate or sell. They all look pretty though!

A quick update....

The bully is still growing much quicker than the rest and is still beating up the other umbees.
Should I still leave them all together? As the smaller ones really are having a hard time.
Any ideas what sex it is yet?
Its colour does vary a lot depending on its mood.

The bully is male. He is going to kill your other umbees. Get that beat guy out ASAP !!!
Not only is he just about beat to death but is a bacterial and parasitic breeding ground.

Sounds like to me you have an exact situation I had. Now my bully umbee AKA..The Menace is alone in my 75. Hes 3.5 - 4 inches now.

Here is the menace in action http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XLZOoNn0tko chasing the other umbees his size. 1 of the umbees stayed under my sponge to avoid abuse , as you can see in the video.

This is why he is alone.

Thanks for all the advice.

I have removed the other 5 Umbees and the bully is now in the tank by itself.

It seems quite happy attacking its reflection for now.

I have grown out festae and dovii groups to much larger sizes and ive never seen this much aggression at this size.

Wow the menace looks really mean! Looks like a future stunner. Keep us all updated!

I hope mine is a male too. How can you tell it is?

Males grow much faster than females. Males exhibit dominance in a tank. When males get angry their face turns black and nothing else. Females get black in the dorsal fin when angry and males don't. Body shapes and head profile along with color can help sexing.
Main thing is aggression. If you have a group of umbees and 1 seems to push everyone around and out grow them all then 99.999% thats a dominant male.
Not only did the menace beat on 6 other umbees , but he also beat the heck out of 15 umbees he was housed with at the LFS.
The only way a female would exhibit such dominance or aggression is if she was guarding eggs. In this case there were no eggs.
The color and spangling on your bully along with growth rate and attitude says male all the way.

Nice vid! Looks to be developing nicely. I'd say male based on trailer development, forehead development, looks to be developing pearling on the body scales. No evidence of black in the dorsal. His forehead/face also seem to darken quite a bit when he's showing aggression. By no means an expert here though! Nice fish!

I only needed to see the first 3 seconds of the video to tell you that its......... 100% male!!!:) and I'm sure he'll be a stunner for sure.

Outta curiosity, did you get these guys from Rapps? Reason I'm asking is I'm currently growing out a couple from him and your vids and pics may be helpful to me in determining sex if yours are from him.

If you need help with yours then post up some pics:) It doesnt matter where the umbees came from, as they all look too similar at small sizes. but this last video the OP posted, clearly shows a male. the pics of them while smaller doesnt give any indication what so ever for trying to compare any others at that size to help determine sex. Umbees can be very hard to determine sex at times. If the OP would use darker substrate, this male would show better colors.

Thanks FWP! I posted mine a week ago but they're only 4.5" atm and are really only settling in good now. It peaked my interest cuz one of my suspected males is a spitting image of the first pics of his male. Figured since they look pretty much identical they might be from the same source and I might have been able to get some clues from his. I'll be getting more shots of mine up but since I moved them to the 135 growout tank they've been really skittish and are only as of yesterday starting to come out when I'm around. New to Umbee though so I'm still a student here. Thanks
