New venture. - European perch (perca fluviatilis)

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Incidently wednesday13 wednesday13 , that second picture down is the new world record European perch. Apparently the first ever to reach 10lb.

Caught in Poland where, alarmingly, they love eating coarse fish on the bank when they catch them!! I hope that beauty was spared and returned safely.

Uhm, sorry to butt in here but I read somewhere that yellow perch were "smaller & paler" than the european perch... I think it was wiki

Okay, yeah, I acknowledge that the Euro-Perch are a wee bit bigger; their biggest Pike edge ours out a bit as well, but...so what? I would never suggest that "bigger is better"...at least, certainly not when ours are not bigger...:) I was referring specifically to colouration in my earlier comparison.

Paler? Not a prayer. Every one of the pictures posted above shows a nicely coloured fish, no question...but I would wager that every single Perch caught in my neck of the woods, regardless of size, is far brighter and more colourful than any of those shown. The greens, yellows and oranges in a healthy flavescens are much more rich and vibrant, the contrasts far more vivid. Surely any North American anglers reading this would agree?

I won't touch upon the exaggerated poses displayed by those anglers, as we have plenty of those photo-tricksters on our side of the pond as well. My goodness, if those guys leaned over any further toward the camera with those fish shoved out any further in front of them, they'd fall out of the boat. I mean, come on...do they really have hands as big as their own heads? Or is that all skewed perspective?

I must say, Russ, that I'm a bit disappointed in the way you're pandering to our British friend. You know as well as I do that he is working hard on his little island in the North Atlantic to bolster his self confidence, and I applaud your efforts to assist him, but...we don't want him to get a swelled head, do we? :)

There, there, Esox...there, there...those are some pretty nice fish that your buddies are sticking out towards the camera...there, there...:)

See, look what you've started now wednesday13 wednesday13 . You stick to catching pike and keep your nose out of my perch affairs, lol.

If I power feed mine do you reckon I'll have a 10 pounder in my 360 in a couple of years!!

Wish I could defend you Esox but, regardless of what wiki might say, I do remember the perch in the Minnesota lakes being more vibrant. But we used to use them as Walleye bait so European perch definitely have at least one leg up.

Well, a fish that looks like a fluorescent jig in a world of predators ain't gonna get that big!! Lol.

At least our European Perch has had the evolutionary sense to make itself less vulnerable.

Oh, yeah, a nice obese 10-pound grey perch...that's what the world needs...:)

Maybe you can breed up a short-bodied long-fin bubble-eye version while you're at it. 😎

.....Or, just maybe I could breed a really bright coloured one that sticks out like a sore thumb. A glo fish perch no less....oh dammit....i almost forgot....we already have a hideous glo fish perch across the pond. DOH!!

Heeey now esoxlucius esoxlucius im still on ur side with perch lol... I wont tell John alot of europeans fly to canada for better numbers and potentially larger pike. Im just a lowly american piker in a land full of musky elitest and nascar...i mean bass fishermen ... But, yeah.. I do believe you can grow a tanker perch in ur tank. Not sure what ur laws are like for collecting forage fish with a trap or cast net. Thatd be what would beef them up tho. Oily stuff is usually best for packing on the pounds and quick growth as you know for pike in trout lakes...

Minnows would do it nicely, they're just like mini salmon/trout. I know a few places where I could get minnows by the dozen and my perch would gorge themselves on them.

But the risk of introducing pathogens into the tank alongside the live feeding thing doesn't sit well with me.

It'll be interesting to see just how big my perch can get off a diet that doesn't consist of fish. They're still getting lots of protein so I may be pleasantly surprised at their end size.
