I have kept a few Octos, I used to keep the bimac's but lately I have not had must luck getting them to live past the acclimation stage due to the huge temp differences from cold California waters to 78 degree temps.

This time I went with the warm water version. So far it's been smooth. And yeah about a year is the max life expectancy of the smaller octos like this and the bimac. last time I lost my octo after 8 months of constant enjoyment I swore I would never get another one because of the short life. But, I have to admit that I am just too fascinated by them to pass 'em up.

When I built this aquarium setup I made one of the 4 sections a species only tank for either an octo or mantis shrimp. This time around I choose the Octo.

I didn't he just doesn't do it.. lol

I find that most octos are content to stay where they are, I have never seen any of my octos try to escape. The most they do is reach out above the tank to grab my hands. Then after a little while of messing around they go back under the water.

I have lids on the top with maybe 3/4" gaps all around the lids (Arcylic tank) and if he really wanted to he could escape down the overflow (Flooding the house in the process) but again he's never been the slightest bit interested in getting out.

Eels have more of a habit of escaping than octos, and unlike octos eels can't get back in after they figure out it was a mistake to get out in the first place.

I had to keep a octo in a critter keeper in a tank.He kept getting into the overflow as soon as it reproduced it died
