I can see what you mean now, the color gets more dull with time
YMMV as they say... as diet, lighting, substrate and tank color, gender, water composition, pH, etc. will all have their influence, as would genetics too but all in all, I'd not say this fish shows significant variability in its appearance (as compared at the same size and age).
