im still trying to figure out how the flow works in the fx6. does the water come in and hit the outer ring foam first? and then flow top to bottom through the middle? i seem to find goop concentrated in various parts of the filter instead of just one prefilter section.

I think that the water bypasses the media as it is pulled down to the bottom via the plastic pipe. Then it is sent up through the sponges from the bottom?

Yep pretty much it. Fx5 & 6 has water going down the down tube to the bottom, then up through the sponges to the top, then down through media baskets to bottom again, then up through exit tube to the tank.

I wasn't aware that the water did that much travelling before going back into the tank.

OMG that is ratchet...what did it smell like? LOL
It didn't smell rank or anything believe it or not it just made my laudry tub look like someone pooped in a waterless toilet.

Not a fun job. I love canisters but I hate cleaning them out. I'm well past due for clean out on one of my fx5's and have been putting it off till after the holidays, which is anytime now :(

I'm in the same boat. My fx5 was supposed to be cleaned when I had a week off. I went back to work today, but the fx5 didn't get cleaned.

Mine is alot of work due the my cabinet, the doors are too small to pull the filter out, so I have to do all of the work with the canister still under the tank. I really didn't think it through when I put it in through the big openings in the back. One day I'm going to get brave enough to cut the door openings bigger.
