Mine always would come up to me when he is out of the filter. They would spend most of the day in the filter, and would come out at 8:45pm sharp, nearly every single day. The timer on my tank would turn the lights off at 9pm. So they would be out about 15 minutes before lights out. They have great timing, lol.

Also, when mine were out, they would feed out of your fingers as well, and you could pet them, as long as you didn't move too fast and spook them. They were so cool. But somehow, they found a way our of the tank with the glass tops on. The only gap was a small gap along the front of the HOB filter, and I have no idea as to how they could manage that angle to get out. But they did. One day I came home from work, and found one by my sliding glass door. About 2 months later, I woke up and found the other in the middle of the floor. I will be getting 2 more fire eels, but before I get them, I'm building an escape-proof canopy for the tank. It will have vents in the top, and the filter intake and output will go through bulkheads in the back of the canopy (since now I have placed an XP3 canister filter on the tank), so no open holes will be available.

So, you might check your HOB's really well.

I read that these suckers can get up to 2 -3 feet in length> I don't know if that will happen in captivity. Mine hide all the time day or night. Matter of fact I just removed almost all the gravel in the tank last night. I had not seen them in about 4 days. I can usually find their heads sticking out, but not this time. Now with not so much gravel, it easier to spot them. I just put in some caves hoping they use them to hide in instead of the gravel.

The only thing I worry about is if they are getting anything to eat. I'm feeding frozen blood worms. I turn of the filter to let them get to the bottom so they are easier to find. I relly would like to see them eat.

my eel hides under sand

seven hundred and ninety eight:screwy:

my fire eels hide during the day in pvc pipes, very active at night. my Tire track hides in a rock cave thing, only digs if he's spooked. comes out only for food. my striped peacocks come out and cruise at night, but they live with guppies. All of them hide 24/7 the first week I had them more or less. I'de say give it some time, check your HOB... never had an eel who would go up into the filter.. but did have a blueberry botia that did the same thing! lol he was one weirdo fish...

ya my tiretrack used to hide all the time in a cave the lazy bum but i switched the substrate to black sand and took his cave out because he outgrew them now he just cruises around and my peacock is invisible always hiding under the sand i dont know how hes alive actually never seen him eat since i got him, not once even at night hahaha

I guess time is all they need. One of my ZIg Zag is now calling a leaf of one of the plants home. He lays in it like a hot dog in a bun. Looks cool just to see him laying there. The smaller one is still hidding.
