Everything you currently have there will work great for a fresh water tank. Freshwater is the best choice for a beginner. you can replace many lost freshwater fish for the price of one saltwater fish. The cost of a freshwater tank is also more manigable. I am not saying a saltwater tank is bad, they are very rewarding when you have done the research and are prepared for the larger commitment.

get rid of that gravel u have, and get sand, crushed coral will just trap nitrates.

humm.......i would say get a nice protien skimmer, and mabye make a sump for ur tank.
Sand is not a good idea for fowlr.

umm...........no...........sand is the best choice for any SW tank, bigger fish equals more bio load, witch means the waste gets traped in the crushed coral casing the nitrates to rise, and it is much harder to clean.

If u have a FOWLR with sand, all ur "crap" is on the sand, so u just just a vacum and suck it up of the top. ( much eaiser to mantain)

sand is a better chioce and in a SW aquarium it is better looking, and look more nautral.

Try siphoning dirt from sand and watch what happens.Sand also gets into your filter when you have fish.

i sypon my tank all the time with sand, i get tiny bit in the bucket( no big deal) and the only way sand gets into ur filter is if u have a HOB, witch are not good on big tanks, and i have a HOB next to my protien skimmer on my 20, all u do is not stur up the tank, and sometimes i do, i usally never get any in the filter.

Some people like one, some like the other, both work with proper maintainence.
