newbie discus keeper - is this normal?

I agree with Gordon. You'd be better off using just tapwater that's been dechlorinated than using your waste ro water.
I really don't understand why you would use the ro wastewater in the first place. If your running the water through an ro it's to remove something. Whatever gets reomved winds up concentrated in the waste water. So by adding the effluent water you're basically dumping tap water back into your tank.

if they are eating readily as you say then they might just still be adjusting to your water parameters. either way go to this site and post it your problem there with pics

i had the same issue when i first started with discus.... later on the issue started into ich. i think it was because of aggresion in my tank... the juvi discus were stressed out from picking on eachother. my runt got it first then started to spread it. what i did was add salt and raised the temp to about 83-85. 25 percent WC a day for 3 days. i also bought another juvi and that helped alot....within 24 hours all ich was gone and slimecoat was back to normal..

not saying this is your issue but this is what i went thru and thats what i did to fix it...GL buddy!
