Hi guys, I have been doing a bit of searching around on the site in regards to feeding Silver Arowana's.

So far I have been soaking Hikari Gold pellets and Sera Cichlid sticks for about 5 mins before putting them in. The Arow circles them for a bit and then grabs them. I have been also feeding some small/medium crickets which I gut loaded with fish flake food and carrot.

Would waxworms be an acceptable and beneficial food? My other cichlids love them.

Also is it best to feed pellets and sticks every day and then just feed crickets or waxworms once a week?

Are there any foods I should avoid?

Thanks.

the more variation the better. i would suggest to feed him crickets, mealworms, regular worms, shrimp, mussel, fish (filet or feeder every now and then). i feed mine baby mice now and then. and ofc you can feed pellets.

sounds like youve got it. maybe rosies as feeder fish. how big is the aro?

Its just under 6" at the moment.

To be honest I was trying to avoid feeders as I heard fish that eat feeders can get really fussy and start to refuse their regular food. Also you have the worry of bringing disease into your tank from the feeder and the long term problem of the fish ending up with a thiamine deficiency.

Well, if you quarintine your feeders and gut load them with goodies. Regulates how often you actually give him the feeders as a "TREAT" then you should be fine. Useing feeders as a primary food source is like giving your fish big mac's and fries everyday. Here in hawaii we have centipede's that can be caught outside under log's and such. Really cheap treats but for a bigger sized aro though.:D

Ok, I have a small tank I could set up and breed Guppies in and at least that way I would know the fish were healthy.

What about the waxworms? Does anyone use them? I can get them from my LFS who also sells crickets.

I maybe should have titled this thread differently, I am a newbie when it comes to Arowana but not fish in general. :)

i am also trying to avoid feeders w/ my baby silver. but i may try some quarantined rosies or guppies that are gutloaded. i think the fish do have fun chasing them and it makes for a less bored aro. but it also may make for a more aggressive aro?

Aro's are mistaken for being aggressive, not so. Territorial, YES...but wont bother anything that wont fit in it's mouth. I think every once in a while that feeders make for good exercise. I think's it good to know how to hunt, just dont spoil you fish....variety is always good.

post some pix of the little dude.
