So i'm getting a 40 gal tank... Only had goldfish before.... Want to get a oscar, red devil, cichlids, parrot, or terror...Any advice??? I need gravel and some plants for the inside, any recommendations?? Also saw some Aussie Crabs at LFS, are they compatible with the types of fish listed above...want to get the fish tank going before the end of the weekend so i can get some fish in there in a few weeks..PLEASE HELP A NEWB!! All advice and suggestions welcomed and needed.

most cichlids enjoy crabs. oscars and red devils are too big for a 40g. maybe a green terror, but even that is small. btw, they are all cichlids. most cichlids tear up plants that aren't java fern or moss. i suggest a breeding pair of firemouths or convicts, or some mbuna.

all of those fish will eventually growout the 40g, i say a breeding pair of convicts will do fine in the 40g with some pots for hiding.

Could always go with 3-5 Peacock ciclids (albinos, red-shoulders, flametails, etc). Very colorful and peaceful. Not sure how they respond to inverts, as I've never tried it.

2 males probably won't work due to territory / agression issues depending on species.

So i take it I can't have the crabs? I really don't want the breeding so when you say a pair, r 2 males fine?

i wouldn't recommend that, they will fight and cause problems.

Just so you know for these fish you will likely need to do allot of regular maintenance on you tank. You could only start a red devil in that tank in one year he will grow out of it. (That was my first mistake) Whatever you decide for your tanks personality is your choice just do your research on size (Because I diddn't). Some things will come up and allot of trial and error happens when you start your first aggressive tank. The fish you have listed are all large and will become too big for your tank and none of them can have friends other than a placo if they decide thats OK
Just Tell me what your thinking and I can try to help you out more If you want

Okay, i found this website and found some pretty cool fish. Looking for a fish with color and one that has personality and will interact with you. There some fish on the website that recommend a 50 gal but will my 40 gal be good enough for the time being?

The Bumblebee, Zebra's, Peacocks, Demasoni, Green Severum, and Green Terror are all pretty cool. Thanks for the help so far peeps, keep it coming =).

Also anyone know a good shop in the Los Angeles area. Live in Pasadena but willing to drive around LA.

A lot of the fish on this page will probably be ok for a standard 40g (what are the dimensions on the tank? That will make a huge difference.)

Together you could keep an electric yellow, any of the zebras, a bumblebee cichlid, blue johanni, kenyi, fuelleborni.

As far as small south american cichlids there are bolivian rams, various apistogrammas.

Kribensis would be ok for your tank.

Many peacock species will outgrow your tank. Severums will outgrow your tank.
