so competence on food is a great fact on the growth spurt of bichirs. i want to share this observance of mine on my bichirs. when i first bought the 3 sens and 1 ornate, i find they have equal competence of the food.. but when i joined in the albino and delhezi, there comes the prob, my ornate now like to hide on the drift woods and the delhezi sometimes seperates from the other birchirs. is the problem go when i put in the albino and del?

Well, some would argue that competition for food is nature's way of weeding out the sick and weak. Darwin called it, "Survival of the fittest." A good example is a litter of puppies (Domestic or wild). Often times, there is a runt within the litter. Sometimes, the runt survives and sometimes the runt dies. In our hobby, we can intervene and even the playing field. You can either go ahead and allow your fish to be what they were genetically coded to be or you can attempt to slightly alter their genetic coding. I say go ahead and make the appropriate accomodations that will level their playing field. ;)

Good Luck :)

i just got a saddled bichar (endlicheri endlicheri) 3 weeks ago.....you could just barley see the external gills...... I placed him in a 55gal tank......i started him out on minnows, guppies and small goldfish.....he was about 4 inches long 3 weeks ago when i first got him....he is just over 5 inches now..... I noticed that when i put both guppies and minnows in his tank, he would always eat all the minnows first, and then eat the guppies......

to answer your question if your birchirs are skilled enough to catch the live fish. they can easily i have two endli's that eat ten guppies in about three to four days. i also lost a baby frontosa, which is a cichlid, that was way bigger then the endli's head so size will not play much of a factor in catching them. just make sure they have a place to ambush from and catch them. so the drift wood would be great.
