Newbie Planter...

Hey there, n00b chimmin in on this.

Sand in itself is inert so they is nothing coming or going from it. only thing it may do it slightly buffer the pH. You can miz sand in with your other substartes, such as laterite ot flourite, eco-complete what ever floats your boat. you can also put down a THIN layer of peat on the bottom of the tank and cover it with sand, gravel, flourite and that just adds to the goodness of it all.

the other problem you can have with sand is compaction and when it compacts it can get bad. the sand can create pockets of sulfa gas which is harmful to you and your fish. best way to not worry about this is get those pesty trumpet snails. they burry into it and move around keeping it from compacting. the plant roots help but they can only go so far so fast. or everynow and then kinda rake it with a fork.

Corydoras will also move the substrate around a good amount. I have 3 Corydoras schwartzi in my wifes tank.

Just an update... my plants are doing alright so far (after one week of them being in the the tank)... 2-3 have died off, but I think my CAE had something to do with that... but I DID notice that the plants that were bunched together seem to be doing much better, so I've bunched most of them together and we'll just have to see how it goes...

BTW... here are some pics of my plants when I got them... got any positive ID's for me on what they are?

first one is anachris ( elodea densia ) and the second is java fern. pretty easy plants to grow

The guy at the LFS told me that it'd take 2-3 weeks for the roots to grow and set... does that sound about right?

sound about right. if you have alot of light and other things it usually takes less time but for most people that sounds about right. i can get stuff rooted in less then a week in most my tanks but then again i spend to much time and money on them

lights on 12 hours, off 12 hours is what i have had good success with... also, has been my experience that most plants sold as "bunch plants" will eventually start sending out new growths toward the base, so they do kind of "spread"... i use eco-complete, about an inch and a half deep with good results... also i use flourish excel in lieu of ferts and co2... has done a good job in my experience....

good luck with your tank!
