newbie ray.

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I started with a motoro and so far it is working out and since I also added a large tiger ray as my 2nd. So far so good! hope I didn't jinx myself

Motoros are the only rays i have ever had any luck with! Definately motoro.

Motoro, I got my first ray a while ago and now he is so fricken fat that I could prolly not feed him for a year and he would have fat left to burn, lol. Also motoros are the best looking pattern wise.

I also own a retic and histrix though but I really have no experience with them because I got them last thursday, lol.

how are your rectics coming along? where did you get them from?

what if space is a LITTLE issue?

How big do motoros get and whats the minimum tank width for life? I saw a beauty at LFS and thinking of picking it up:drool:

motoro all the way. are the puruvian "histrix" as hardy as a motoro or not?

From my experience, they seem to be just as hardy. The only problem I see with the Peruvian "Histrix" is that they usually come in undersized and can have problems from the start. The only time I have ever lost a Peruvian Motoro variant is from it coming in undersized and ended up not gettingenough food/got bullied/competition/stress, etc

The best starter ray is a Motoro I'd say, especially if tank size isn't an issue. I have never lost a Motoro before, but I only order them in the 7-9" range. I would recomend starting with any stingray atleast this size. The smaller 'teacup' styles are hard to care for and need specialized diets most of the time, while a big motoro will usually take shrimp quickly.

If you intend on having a real big tank and want something a little different, I have found that Castexi rays are very hardy as well.. but most get big, 30"+..
