I love the mix tanks. Throw anything and everything in and make it something different.

You should get a nice shoal of caribe piranhas. Nice red bellies, very aggressive, and beautiful personalities.

I recommend a pair of medium/large ca/sa cichlids. Cichlid breeding behavior is by far the coolest thing in my opinion. And you can get cichlids with tons of color.

Fish come and go, get decent equipment, it is worth it.

Over filter, go twice what they recommend.

and the biggest thing for me. POOL FILTER SAND. so much time saved by going with PFS, so much cleaner.

Yes I was looking at piranhas too but heard that they are messy eaters and I started questioning my filtration, if I go that route. I really do like the cichlids, and bichir and rope fish too. But I do believe that equipment will be the first investment. Does pool sand come in different colors? I'm thing a black substrate....

you will need more filtration if you decide to do piranhas or cichlids. i love pool filter sand as substarate it is easy to clean and looks great. i think it only comes in white though

Another suggestion would be black diamond blasting media for a substrate i love it and its a much cheaper alternative to black sand its something like 8$ for 50lbs. Just be sure to wash it thoroughly.

The turnover rate for any aquarium should be in the 5x/hr range. If you are going to use undersized filtration, (2x75 rated filters) the bio may be adequate in the beginning, but be mindful that when the bug bites for more fish, bigger fish, whatever, the need for more bio will increase. I would suggest bigger filtration, or, in the least, good water movement, i.e, powerheads. Who wants to look at beautiful fish when there is a bunch of junk floating around in the water?

If you go for the aggressive African cichlid, sometimes the only way to curb aggression is to overcrowd, or species only. This will sometimes only lessen the aggression. These are beautiful fish, easy to take care of and reproduce like rabbits. They stir the substrate, dig and undermine whatever is sitting on the substrate and are messy eaters....more filtration.

There are tons of cool fish out there and a 120g is a great tank to start with. The bigger the tank, the easier in my opinion.
Jusy do your research and take it slow.
Welcome aboard!
