newbie to the arowana scene

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
not sure what other color spectrum fish can see but they can see red for sure, maybe thats why they are so sensitive to red???

Tank size has alot to do with the aros being skittish. You did not say what size your silver is but if ya have had it in a 55g for 3 months it's probably getting cramped.

My silver arowana are indeed freaked out by the color red. There was no way I could even get near the tank when they were in the 180g. No that they are in the 450g, they don't freak out but you can tell it still makes them nervous and they will move away.

you have a jardini and a silver in a 55?
aro's are nervous fish, its natural for them to be jumpy at least for the first while.

No they are in different tanks, well I have had the silver for atleast 3 months now is that normal?

your aro is going to out grow the 55 real fast... back to your question.

give it some time to adjust. if the problem remains after 2 weeks. you could try what i did.

feed the aro less, alot less. this way the fish stays hungry and it will swim to you to feed instead of running away to hide. once it gets used to you, you can feed normally again.
my friend sugested this method when i had the same problem, and it worked for me, only took a few days.

good luck

i work grave so i sleep all day and **** like that. but they only get fed once a day.

Have you noticed any difference in nervousness depending on what color you're wearing? My silver used to freak and jump out of the tank whenever I wore a red shirt. It hated anything red....

nope never noticed

i got him 3 months ago at 3 inches

Hey Cheebang.. there are a million answers to aros being skittish or easily spooked.. I have 4 Silvers.. one 16" and 3 around 8". The largest aro, have him for about a year, took its time to get acclimatized to me.. and i've had the three 8" aros from about 4" long for the last 4 months. Patience is the key. I read in the earlier posts that you could spend time with them.. I do.. quite a bit.. the only thing i dont quite agree is keepin them in your bed room.. there is constant movement and i'm sure you switch off the lights at night or while you sleep.. you could try moving them to a place where there is lesser movement.. natural lighting.. generally any wild animal has something called flight distance.. if you violate that flight distance they try to flee.. see how far you can get to the tank without them gettin jumpy.. just give these points a ponder.. hope all will be well soon.. cheers mate..
