Hello MFK. I am very new to the hobby. Have been doing lots of research for the past 8 months or so before I decided to commit to it. I just got my tank set up. What I'm looking for is where to buy fish online. Have seen several sites, but would like to know where you guys go for fish. There are no lfs's around here that are worth going to. So it seems my only option. What I'm looking to get is a Red Tail Catfish and a Tigrinus Catfish. I am open to and would really appreciate any suggestions and pointers from some experienced keepers. Thanks.

the red tail should not cost you much, the tigrinis, quite a bit more. I'm sure a vendor here would be glad to help. but for being so new to the hobby, i'm not sure if a red tail is what you wanna start out with and definitely not the tigrinis. good luck

and welcome to mfk!

Thanks for the suggestions. From what I've seen, they don't seem to be terribly hard to care for, and I'm pretty anal about anything like this. I've researched prices, but I'm mainly just looking for a place to purchase them at that has a good rep, good prices, and good service.

And to the question about my tank size, I purchased 3 tanks already. lol. All with no fish yet. 55g, 75g, and 125g. Found them all at incredible deals at different times/places, and couldn't pass them up.

Aslo I am curious about tossing in a pleco in a tank with them. Any suggestions to a type? Looking for something that will grow with them and not get eaten. Yes I realize that the catfish will keep growing, but at least for a couple years till I have to move them.

Even if you buy the red tail catfish at 3" or so it will grow to a foot in probably 2-3 months. By the first year expect it to be over the 2' mark...

Most of these cats get bought and sold later on because the owner cannot provide a suitable home for them. The least tank size i would keep on in would probably be a 10'x10' tank/ponf and even then you will have to upgrade in a couple years.

Agreed:iagree: If i was you i would start off with the lima shovelnose and a few cichlids or some flowerhorn.

This ^

The red tail cat should be gone from your mind forever with a 125g tank. :D

The tigrinis, will cost a lot, and they are verryyyy delicate. So, I wouldn't start out with that if you are new. As suggested, a lima shovelnose cat would be brilliant. :)

Thanks for the advise. I am familiar with the growth of the red tail. I am currently digging a fish pond in my back yard for future plans for the catfish I'm getting. So I'm not worried about the size atm. But I would like some suggestions on other catfish that I can keep in my tanks. Mainly the 55g which sits in my living room. Something that has some good color to it. I'm not really a fan of cichlids at all. So ideas on some cool small-midsize catfish would be awesome.

Still looking to hear about some good places to shop for my fish online. :)

This is the shovelnose that I was looking for. Guess its not the tig? I checked out the lima shovelnose, and really dont like it much. Anyone have experience with a jaguar catfish? I think that's what it is called anyhow.
