Don't pick on skipjack. There are a lot of people who pass through this forum asking about keeping native fish with the intention of rereleasing them back to the wild or dumping them into another stream so they can fish.

However those activities are illegal. If you want to keep one without releasing it into the wild or be able to fish species that are not found in local waterways, arrange for a privately-owned pond and ask the Fish and Wildlife to stock the pond.

I have to admit there is a bit of a "native fish gang" here but this has developed due to the incredible volume of people in this particular aspect of the hobby that intend to release fish. It's frustrating since this is basically a universal law and is in every state fishing regulation book I've read.

I've said this before and I'll say it again. We're one bad release away from having this hobby taken away. It's pretty easy for the government to outlaw possession of live native fish in the home aquaria.

As far as your initial question....I believe Drewish has given you good info, I agree with him.

Okay, Okay I was kind of harsh. I know I am a bit of a gangbanger and all, but I get so darn tired of reading the same scenario time and time again. 20 minutes of research can lead anyone to the fact that releasing fish is illegal. For gods sakes do some research! What I cannot cope with here is the remark" I do not care about life" This makes me sick! Why would anyone who does not care about life try to learn more about it? My parents taught me that life was precious, and you never kill without good reason. My children have learned the same. I cherish our rivers, lakes, and other wild places, and am not going to pretend to be okay with people who place little value there.
BTW Bukster you may know more about fish than I, which is debatable,but I have spent all of my life learning about the outdoors. I am no slouch when it comes to this category. Believe it.

We are all here to help each others and share information. However a lot of us are still tense about what other members had done in the past that led to the governments to impose laws just because of a few bad keepers. Look at some of the southern states or Hawaii that banned some of the tropical fish; the reasonings behind those laws are the same reasons why there are outcries about our native keeping. I didn't means no offense. While Skipjack may had been out of line for attacking you, he did have a fustration that come with the hobby that many of us share.

Or any non-stereotypical exotic fish for that matter. I am not sure if people realize this, however there are some places where native-keeping of any animals is banned entirely because people re-release them or harvest them too heavily.

When keeping native fish, keep them for life or arrange for someone to take them, or arrange for a privately-owned pond. Sometimes if you contact the Fish and Wildlife, the F&W can find a use for them as well.

Either way Drewish got the best suggestions for what to do with your setup.
