Yes i agree with nick an Oscar is a great fish to start with or you could if you just want something to look at start with a pair of tinfoil barbs they can grow to around 14" This is a very large barb, which grows quickly from the juvenile size often seen for sale. They are suitable companions for other non-aggressive fish in large display aquaria. Hope this helps you.

Hate to bump an old thread, but I don't think that tinfoils are a good choice for a 7 year old. They need a tank that's way too big for a 7 or 8 year old to handle.
