This is about as basic as it gets, and it works wonders! No baffles, no intricate chambers, none of that crap. I have done sumps and wet-drys of all flavors and intricacies (except moving bed), and this is the easiest way possible.

I'm hoping other members will help me out on adding to this thread, but this is just a start. I am in extreme pain right now and don't want to type for an hour.

My sumps have always been big open repurposed aquariums. ..preferably acrylic....
I agree 200% with OP....the complicated sumps often seen are impressive. ...in their own right....but if you are a practical fish keeper like most on here, simple is sacred.

I agree. This is how sumps should be made. Eliminate all the extra stuff for simplicity's sake and ease of maintenance.

Thanks for sharing this, it's a good visual guide to easily do a sump. It certainly doesn't have to be k1 beds and algae scrubbers.

As much as I'd like to agree with everyone..... yes it will work if the stock/bio is relatively light...... but if the bio is high, that design will not work as it will not be able to keep up with the necessary beneficial bacteria needed to grow..... in such cases, a wet/dry or moving bed is called for...... I will agree some sumps are just way too complicated.....

You're absolutely right: this is about as basic as you can get as far as sumps go. It is, however, far from the most efficient. Half the fun of this hobby is tweaking and improving upon your system. A baffle or two would force water through your media and make it work that much better.
