If you guys remember, I had some issues with my 70 gallon, and went through a few different kinds of fish. I had issues with water levels, I had issues with my plants, I had issues with my substrate. I got so frustrated, I finally just rehomed my fish and let the tank run empty.

My guy and I went to pick up a 50g tank off craigslist the other day. The guy had a pair of Midas cichlids in it we were originally planning to just rehome, as we needed the tank for another one of our fish, but I saw these guys and fell in love. We put them in my 70 gallon, but quickly found out they were not as "paired" as the guy told us. The larger female went after the smaller male non stop. We tried giving the little guy some hiding places, but it didn't slow her down one bit. So this morning we gave her to a lfs, and I've just got the 10" left. He's got some damage on his dorsal fin, we're debating possibly cutting it to see if we can get it to grow back normally.
Very excited to have this guy, and see how big I can get him. Definitely bummed they couldn't play nice, as the female was probably closer to a foot long :-/

You're probably better off with just one Midas in a 70 anyway. he's a good looking fish, nice pick up!

Yeah, there are no plans to add anything else to the tank. I figure I'll just let him own the tank. Who knows how long he's been getting beat up for before we picked them up.

He looks great. Too bad about the dorsal fin. I know the feeling every time I see the haircuts my wife gives my boys.

He's fun to watch. He does not appreciate my decorating one bit. He's been pulling up the plants all day, and picking up the sand and spitting it out in different areas. I'm pretty particular about my tanks, so I'm going to have to get creative to figure out a way around that.

no matter how hard i tried to aquascape mine just rearranged everything so i just gave up and let him keep it how he wanted. mine used to draw blood on me everytime i stuck my hand in the tank

Yeah, I kept replanting the plants and filling the holes back up, and he would immediately go down in that one spot, picking up mouthfuls of sand and moving them. We drilled holes in a few ping pong balls so they would float midlevel and threw them in the tank. That's occupying him for the moment, so we'll see what the tank looks like in the morning. He only seems interested in the tall grass and larger plants, he's left the short bottom cover plants alone, so I may just pick up some more of those for the tank.

he is very impressive, doesn't look like he was doing to bad with his previous mate before coming into your possession if that what he has grown into. it possible the bond was broken (temporarily or not) in the move/relocation... you also have to expect a bit of aggression amongst pairs when kept in slightly less than ideal space. In my experience larger female smaller male pairings are very volatile and seldom work beyond spawning or long term and usually end with a dead male. i dont think you will be successful with you scaping attempts either lol. I have never met an Amph that lets you have your way with decorating their home. i have seen some in naturally planted tanks even kept with swords and mollies but those were spectacular examples that their are always exceptions to the norm. keep trying you and him may find a compromise eventually lol
