he is very impressive, doesn't look like he was doing to bad with his previous mate before coming into your possession if that what he has grown into. it possible the bond was broken (temporarily or not) in the move/relocation... you also have to expect a bit of aggression amongst pairs when kept in slightly less than ideal space. In my experience larger female smaller male pairings are very volatile and seldom work beyond spawning or long term and usually end with a dead male. i dont think you will be successful with you scaping attempts either lol. I have never met an Amph that lets you have your way with decorating their home. i have seen some in naturally planted tanks even kept with swords and mollies but those were spectacular examples that their are always exceptions to the norm. keep trying you and him may find a compromise eventually lol

A week into it, and I've given up. I tried making a barrier with some driftwood to keep him away from the plants, but he got around that. I drilled some small holes in a flat piece of acrylic and put the plants through, then buried the acrylic, but he just decided to start burying the plants. So he won - I took all the plants out, and now he's just got the sand, a few rocks and some small driftwood pieces. I can't see how he could like that better than having some heavy cover to swim through, but if he's happy then I guess I'm happy.

i'm in the minority on this but I love it when my Midas excavates the hell out of my tank and create huge mounds. Kinda like he's making himself a bunker.

I'm pretty particular about my tanks and how they look, so this is pretty difficult for me. His tank is right in the living room when you walk in, so it's the first thing everyone sees when they come over. But, this is how he wants his tank. So this is how he gets his tank. He's a very cool fish to watch, though. Starting to find his little fish balls, as he's started charging any time I put my hand in the tank (that may be because any time I had my hands in the tank, it's been to wreck his work and rebury all the plants he worked so hard to pull up).

I'm with you on this also man. I kinda like it as well. If a person wants a pretty tank buy some swords and mollies. haha:headbang2 To me thats part of the attraction for the amphs they are kinda like a naughty puppy that digs up your flower bed.:D

Agree with fishandfire, no cutting, it would just add stress and open to fungal infection. And a 70 gal is only big enough for him.

I have no plans to add anything else to the tank. And no cutting - it has started to grow back nicely on its own.
I am going to have to make my own food for him, as he refuses pellets and anything other than night crawlers and waxworms. The people I got him from told me they fed him bloodworms exclusively....
Anyone make their own food? Do you add veggies to the mix, or would you recommend just protein base and pellets?

After seeing your fish I really want one now! Do they have to be kept alone? If I raised it with some Peacock Bass could it possibly work?

I'm sure with a large enough tank and an equally aggressive/sized tankmate, it COULD work. But when I first brought home the two of them, the female terrorized the male nonstop. Now that she's gone, he's become so aggressive, he attacks anything in the tank that moves. I think it would just be easier to keep them by themselves.
