Newest jewel pics

Loco_loco it is possible that the fish in question is female because the rear fins are rounded but the best & really only sure way to tell with certain species (hemichromis being one) is to vent them. Meaning watch the area around where they defecate to see if the tube is oval shape(female) or pointed(male) when it drops out.

it looks like a female with the intense red on its tail

Nice Jewels, except for the gravel, it looks like my tank, babies and all.

Thanks. Have your jewels been spawning like crazy? This pair has spawned 5x in 4.5 months.

The November spawn have begun pairing off and defending territory.

I'm quite sure these are Hemichromis Lifalili (not bimaculatus).
don't know if in the biz in U.s.a. their name is Jewel too.

I don't know if there are any true bimacs in the hobby in the U.S. It's hard enough to find anything other than Hemi. guttatus or a hybrid thereof.
Even some strains sold as "lifalili" are actually gutts, which I can understand because they look so similar.
Here, I've heard anything from the Hemichromis genus is referred to as a "jewel".

I believe that they are Hemichromis cristatus. The fish have a yellow band that runs through their midline and max out at 3 - 3.5 inches.
